What works in the studio doesn’t always work in real life. You might train for years before you excel in traditional martial arts. Along the way, you will accumulate techniques and philosophies – even a wardrobe – that you’ll never use outside the studio. In real life, you may have to defend yourself on ice, on sand, or in a tightly-confined space against an assailant who doesn’t play by the rules of your particular discipline. Out on the street, even a black belt can be an easy mark – sure, he can fight if the conditions are ideal. But in the real world, the conditions are never ideal.
